How to play Guess the Real Size
Adjust the area ratio, reveal the map-based answer, and complete five untimed questions. Learn the controls and scoring rules.
Compare B with the reference country A
Start 5 questions opens the first question. Read both names and look at the outlines. Their displayed areas start equal; the initial size does not reveal the correct answer.
Set the area of B as a multiple of A. Use 0.5× for half the area, 1× for the same area, or 2× for twice the area. Every question accepts a guess from 0.25× to 4×.
Use the controls that suit you
Drag the slider with a mouse or finger, or focus it and use the arrow keys. The minus and plus buttons make small changes. You can also type a value in the number field, with up to three decimal places.
The slider is logarithmic: half and double sit equally far from 1×. Invalid or out-of-range numbers show an explanation and cannot be submitted. When a valid number field is focused, Enter reveals the answer. You can also tab to each button and activate it normally.
Area is different from length
Making a shape twice as wide and twice as tall gives it four times the area. The game adjusts the outline’s length by the square root of your chosen area ratio.
After Reveal answer, both outlines use a shared scale. The answer and your score are locked; changing a control cannot add more points. Skip also reveals the answer and awards 0 points.
Five scores add up to 500
An exact ratio earns 100 points. The same multiplicative error above or below the answer receives the same penalty. The game scores your displayed three-decimal guess against the full-precision map-based answer. Rounding may make the displayed answer look exact even when it is an approximation.
| Your guess compared with the answer | Points |
|---|---|
| Exactly correct | 100 |
| Twice or half the correct ratio | 50 |
| Four times or one quarter of the correct ratio | 0 |
| Skipped | 0 |
Review your round, then try another five
Each answer appears before you continue. After the fifth explanation, See results shows the total, the number answered and skipped, and all five comparisons. Play another 5 starts a new round; Review answers lets you revisit the result.
Questions come from a shuffled bank of 20 pairs. A round never repeats a question. The current round stays in memory, so switching tabs or fullscreen keeps it, while refreshing starts again. There is no timer or permanent best score.
